Table-Based Elephant

Profoundly useful thought by Will Davies in reference to 40% cut to teaching budgets in UK universities:

“As universities set about swallowing this noxious potion, it’s interesting to reflect that policy wonks, innovation gurus and (for largely strategic reasons) many university representatives themselves have spent much of the last 20 years heralding the benefits of a “knowledge-based economy”, without at any point considering that if an elephant clambers upon an antique table and stands there, the elephant will undoubtedly be “table-based”, potentially even after the table legs have inevitably given way.” (“Thought for the Day”, Potlatch, October 21, 2010)
